Sleeping Beauties knocked my socks off. I was not expecting to like it as much as I do so was very pleasantly surprised by how damn good it is.

Many commentators have complained about a reduction in quality of Stephen King’s writing in recent years. Some feel his work has declined since he was struck by a van while walking in 1999. I believe King himself has written that some of his books from the mid-1980s through the mid-1990s, specifically Tommyknockers and Insomnia, were subpar due to his heavy drug & alcohol usage at the time.

While I have yet to read a Stephen King book that I don’t like (except for Gwendy’s Button Box, the exception that proves my rule), I do agree that the quality of his writing has steadily improved since From a Buick 8 in 2002.

Hitherto, I’d also been one of those fans who irritates King in my belief that The Stand was his best book and would always be his best book. So when I found myself unable to put Sleeping Beauties down, and again when I spent the last 25 pages of the book crying about how beautiful it was, how nicely the Kings had handled the denouement, and begging the gods of fiction that they’d collaborate again soon, I had to revise my long-held opinion. I can’t wait to see what they do next. Please, Stephen and Owen King, don’t let this be your last collaboration.

The only bad thing about Sleeping Beauties is that I started 2018 with it. I’ll be measuring every other work of fiction I read the remainder of this year against it, and that’s a shame because it sets the bar very high, and I fear it’ll be a forlorn attempt to find anything else quite as good.

      1. I read 4 or 5 novels, but the last one is totally out of ‘style’.
        I’m a fan of non-fiction mostly 😂
        Deep in my heart I also hope(believe?) that I’m still a sci-fi fan. But I don’t read sci-fi nowadays, so probably can’t call myself a fan 🤨🧐

      2. I read TONS of sci-fi when I was a kid & through my teen years but only occasionally read it now. I read a really good contemporary sci-fi novel last year called _The Punch Escrow_. Whenever you’re in the mood to read sci-fi again, I recommend it.

      1. Stephen King (I’ve never read any Owen King) has a way of creating an anxiety – anticipation – that no other author has done for me. I can’t wait to see where this goes.

  3. Dude, I will read anything that Stephen King writes. Except for the really scary ones. Is this scary? If it is at least less scary than The Shining then I will happily read it.
    I’ve read 2/3 of the Mr Mercedes series and I need to read the final book. And I’m still yet to read The Stand but seeing as it’s meant to be sci-fi (?) I’m not sure how interested I’d be.

  7. Okay…finished SB today. I really liked it even though I dreaded it. I’ll say one thing – I would have been the one woman who wouldn’t go back. I think they had a good thing going there and if the Kings had gone with option two, they could have made a sequel.

  10. It’s still on my TBR list. I read it soon though. I did like Gwendy’s Button Box, not love, but like. Also, I agree with you on a Buick 8, being one of his books where the writing was great. Love Stephen King 🙂
