The following disheartening but amusing story was reported by Brandon Carter in The Hill, a newspaper that covers the American government in Washington, D.C., on January 19th, 2018.
While discussing the looming but entirely avoidable government shutdown, in a delightfully candid moment, Louisiana Republican Senator John Kennedy said, “Our country was founded by geniuses, but it’s being run by idiots.” That made me laugh out loud, and there’s no better way to start a new work week on a rainy Monday than laughter. It gets my vote for Quote of the Year. Also on Friday, Utah Republican Senator Orrin Hatch stated that the Senate has some “really stupid people” in it.
A government shutdown is no laughing matter and will do lasting harm to my beloved but deeply flawed country. But what can I do about it but laugh? Thank you, Senators Kennedy and Hatch, for helping me start my week off laughing!
