Quality Quotes #4

“Love is the answer, at least for most of the questions in my heart
Like why are we here? And where do we go? And how come it’s so hard?”
Jack Johnson

I like to listen to music while cleaning house.  While I was cleaning The Boss’s bathroom this past weekend, I was groovin’ to Pandora’s Nickel Creek Radio, which at some point offered up Jack Johnson’s “Better Together” for my listening pleasure.

Jack got it right with that profound statement.  Part of my personal philosophy is that, in all things, I strive to act out of love.  Mind you, I don’t always succeed; I ain’t perfect, y’know?  It doesn’t matter what I think.  It doesn’t matter what I believe.  All that matters is what I do, and if what I do isn’t motivated by love, my action is unlikely to profit me or anyone else.  What do y’all think?

I already know what I’m going to post for QQ #5, another love-related lyric from a popular band I enjoy.  Meantime, y’all care to make any guesses?  Or suggestions?

Take care, be well, and happy blogging.

Love,

Denny

  1. Interesting. the bit about it being “so hard” — I always wonder about that, I mean, compared to what? What else to we have? Harder than we want it to be? Hard because we resist the obvious all the time? Hard because we like it that way?

I’m more with Nietzsche on this one, “You tell me ‘life is hard to bear,’ but if it were otherwise how would you have your pride in the morning and your resignation in the evening? Life is hard to bear: but do not pretend to be so tender! We are all of us pretty fine asses and asses of burden!” Zarathustra

    1. I wholeheartedly agree with Nietzsche’s statement, and like Jason Isbell, I’ve had it relatively easy. But in my years as a PO, I’ve worked with countless people whose entire lives have been an endless struggle against adversity, poverty, and prejudice.

I don’t think of Johnson’s statement as being indicative of succumbing to hopelessness following difficulty, I simply find it an acknowledgment that, at times, everyone endures hardship. It’s more of a reminder to be kind than to give in.

  2. Wonderful quote. I hadn’t thought of it that way, but that makes a lot of sense and I should probably start applying it more often in my life. I’m with you, it can get very, very, very difficult – my natural impulse is to be full-on Eleanor Shellstrop, but I’m learning. Love makes things a lot easier to bear. Love makes us happier. Love… does so damn much for us. May we all have it. Keep on with the quotes series, I’m enjoying these philosophical discussions!

I can’t guess anything to do with bands, sorry, I’m not well-versed… but I’ll hazard a guess and say AC/DC. I’ll read your next post and see if I got it right!

    1. Ha ha ha ha HAAAAHH, Soph, you crack me up! I think the closest AC/DC ever wrote to a love song was “Big Balls”. Or maybe “For Those About to Rock (We Salute You)”.

But seriously, thank you for guessing, you’re the first one to take a stab at it. And hey, I really like that new series of multicultural interviews you’ve started, keep up the good work! Much more important than my silly ravings!

      1. Ah, well, you learn something new everyday. And, er, “Big Balls” is a love song? Sounds more like a horn dog song.

It was fun, personally I love the questions that you ask at the end of your posts! Thank you, that means a lot. There’s different types of posts, and all of them are valid, in my opinion! ☺️
