A Bit (More) About Me #11

–Via Melanie B. Cee’s Share Your World for 2/24/20

Q: What do you think of best friends of the opposite sex?  Or to put it another way “Can men and women ever be platonic friends?  Doesn’t sex always get in the way?”

A: Yes, men and women can be platonic friends.  I know many people, single as well as married or in committed, monogamous relationships, who have multiple platonic friends of the opposite sex.

Q: What is the greatest struggle you’ve overcome?

A: The near-dissolution of my marriage in 2009, when The Girl was only 3 then 4 years old.  After a 5-month separation, The Boss & I decided our relationship was worth preserving.  The months we spent doing the hard work of repairing 15 years’ worth of bickering, brawling, and intentionally inflicted wounds were difficult ones indeed.  We emerged from that dark time not only in love with each other again but with a more durable bond, deeper love, stronger commitment, and most importantly, for the first time, mutual sincere respect. And our second (and final) child, The Boy!

Q: What is the darkest thought you’ve ever had? What about the darkest thing you’ve done that you’ve never told anybody about? (obviously you’ll be telling now if you choose to.  Telling might unburden you a little though.)

A: There’ve been plenty of times in my life that I have wished specific harm on people.  I have also occasionally wished that, when certain people’s time is up, their suffering will be long or unendurably intense before they’re granted the peace of death.  Thank goodness dark thoughts are as ineffective as prayers in influencing the physical world, right? Sorry folks, but the darkest thing I’ve ever done and told few people about shall remain unshared here.  I don’t think the statute of limitations has run out on it yet!

Q: One fun one because the others are pretty deep: what is your least favorite food?

A: Damn, that’s a tough one.  Hmm… I… Don’t know?  Maybe candied yams?  I have a well-earned reputation here at the courthouse as an indiscriminate glutton, and fellow county employees are forever bringing me food.  Right now, for instance, our break room fridge contains homemade chili, meatloaf, BBQ ribs, chicken gizzrds, and chocolate cake that were brought for me by five different folks within the past 10 days.  If I didn’t know any better, I’d think they were trying to make me fat.

GRATITUDE: Share a thought, write a story or poem or share a meme about gratitude.  If you’d like to.  As with the other questions, this is optional.

I am grateful for Mel & her Share Your World prompts, for the hosts of the three daily prompts I participated in today, and for all you lovely Bloggers out there who take the time to read my thoughts and share your world with me. I am especially grateful for my parents and my Super Aunt, without whose material & logistical support The Boss & I would struggle mightily to provide The Girl & The Boy the life they deserve.

Y’all take care, be well, and fight the good fight!

Love,

Denny

  1. Thank you sincerely Denny, for Sharing Your World. You have a unique gift – the ability to laugh at yourself (gently)..as illustrated in that ‘most disliked food’ question. I suspect that your co-workers are just lovely sharing folk, who have a bit of extra and think of you – and then bring it to you. A good appetite and appreciative palate are wonderful! Have a great week Denny and congratulations on your marriage. I know how difficult it can be and that you overcame is amazing! Congrats to both you and your ‘boss’. 😉

  2. I think men and women can be friends, but I’ve found in my experience when you become very, very good friends, they usually tend to want a little bit more.

Now you and your wife’s marriage is one for the romance books. I’m glad to hear that you’ve managed to emerge stronger. I’ll be carrying on that lesson if need be!

You’re definitely not alone in those dark thoughts, thankfully for many of us they remain just thoughts. But I have to disagree when it comes to prayer, I’ve prayed for some truly random things and gotten exactly that! One day I’ll write a blog post about it.
