Answer to FPQ #21

via Fandango’s Provocative Question #21

fpq

Q: Do you think America is ready for an openly gay person to be elected to the office of President of the United States? Explain your opinion.

A:  I do think America is ready for an openly gay person to be elected to the office of President of the United States.  It appears that many, many, many members of Generation X, Millenials, and Generation Z (and even some Baby Boomers!) have, in the last 20 years or so, come to accept homosexuality, varying gender definitions, and their attendant “alternative” lifestyles than I would’ve thought possible during my teens in the mid- to late 1980s.

Unfortunately, I don’t think the VOTING American electorate or, more importantly, the members of the Electoral College, are ready for the same.

Good luck, Mayor Pete!

  1. Interesting question and answer! Personally, I don’t know why sexual orientation would matter, but it’s a complicatedly politically-correct an incorrect world we live in!

  2. It’s absurd that gender orientation has anything to do with anything other than someone’s sexual behavior. And why does anyone need to factor that into leadership? It’s one of the stupider things of our world, IMO. Colorado has an openly gay governor. I suppose there are people who care about that but most people just hope he does a good job.

  3. Good answer and I’m afraid you’re right. While, in general, people are more easy going about sexual orientation, I fear that the evangelicals and religious conservatives would campaign hard against a gay candidate, just as many did in 2016 against a female candidate. So as good as Mayor Pete appears to be, I don’t think he can win. I would love to be proven wrong.

    1. I hate to break it to you, Fandango, but unless the economy tanks and stays in the toilet between now & next November, you better get ready for 4 more years of the current administration. Of course, I’m hoping desperately to be proven wrong.

      1. I don’t hope the economy tanks, but I do hope that American people realize that re-electing Trump would be guaranteeing the end of American democracy foreverZ

  4. I find it fascinating that something that was completely inconceivable only a generation ago is entering the realm of possibility now. I’m super hopeful that we will one day be able to elect leaders based on ability instead of all the other things we feel are important. Sexual proclivity shouldn’t really be anyone’s business. Openly gay and atheist. Now that would be something!
